There’s nothing more exciting than discovering a new band. Much like falling in love, a great record can stop you in your tracks, give you the chills, and have you texting all your friends.
Such was the case last week when I found Magic Circle. Evocative of the best days of Black Sabbath, the 5-piece Boston outfit serves up classic, driving metal with vocals from lead singer Brendan Radigan that are 75% Ozzy, 20% Dio, and 5% Paul Stanley. High praise.
Magic Circle has 2 albums, a 2013 self-titled release and the newest, “Journey Blind.” Both have a firm footing in the doom metal genre, with just enough prog to spice things up.
The heavy riffs, coupled with the cult lyrics and album art, bring to mind the term “throwback.” But in so many ways, that diminishes the band. These guys aren’t imitators – they are worthy successors.
Want to learn more? There’s not a whole lot of info out there (the band isn’t on Facebook and seems to have relatively low profile on the Web), but here’s a good interview. You can also stream “Journey Blind” on their site.
